Exercises of Practical Life are simple everyday activities which are performed in our daily life. These activities serve in improving motor skills and self confidence in the child. But more than anything these activities make a child self-dependent in his/her daily activities.
EPL activities come under four areas:
Social graces where children learn social etiquette like how to cough or sneeze; how to greet others; arrange a table etc.
Preliminary activities where children are introduced to spooning and pouring solids and liquids, cutting and grating.
Care of the environment like sweeping, mopping, dusting, polishing objects are introduced to the child.Care of the Self where children learn to open and close various types of button s, buckles and laces; washing hands; serving their own food.
Exercises of Practical Life are the very foundation of the Montessori method . While doing these activities the young children learn concentration, order and coordination of their fine motor movements.
Completing their work, winding up and replacing their work materials help children learn good work habits and sensitize them to their own and others’ needs.
