The Math Materials in the Montessori environment, in their simplicity of presentation, completely engross the child’s “Mathematical mind”.
Before working with the Math apparatus, the children have been indirectly prepared with the exercises of practical life and sensorial materials
The Exercises of Practical Life have prepared the child to develop logical and sequential thinking skills.
The Sensorial materials have given the child an opportunity to work with several quantities up to 10, using materials of various dimensions.
When they begin working with the Math material they are now introduced to numerical values. The four Arithmetic operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division are presented to the children in the concrete form with the material. They actually put together, take away, carry forward, borrow, change quantities with the materials. This gives the children a sensorial experience of the abstraction of mathematics. This enables them to store concepts, so that, when the time comes to deal exclusively in abstract terms, the understanding is already present. They soon develop their interest and explore the depths of the wonderful world of numbers.
